Regional Councillor Brampton Wards 1 & 5

Information

RRL

Due to historically high rental violations, the City of Brampton launched a two-year Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) Pilot Program in Wards 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7. Councillor Santos, as a community leader and a  member of the RRL Task Force, has been actively involved in overseeing this initiative, which ensures rental properties meet property standards and Ontario Fire Code regulations. As of November 1, 2024, 2,920 units have been licensed, helping to maintain neighborhood character and improve housing safety.

Improved Bylaw Enforcement

Recognizing ongoing concerns about property standards and rental violations, Councillor Santos has been a strong advocate for increased bylaw enforcement. The City has hired 26 full-time and 14 part-time officers, enhanced enforcement procedures, prioritized property standards, and increased fines for repeat offenders. A Community Standards Blitz is scheduled for 2025 to address problem areas more proactively. Residents are encouraged to report issues through the 311 service request page to help identify hotspots and repeat violations.

Community Safety Office

Councillor Santos has supported the City’s first Community Safety Action Plan, developed through extensive consultation, including town halls, advisory committee sessions, and input from over 1,800 residents through the Nurturing Neighbourhoods Program. The plan, led by the Community Safety and Well-Being Office, focuses on Safety, Awareness, and Empowerment to ensure residents feel safer, more connected, and have a stronger sense of belonging.

Safer Drivers = Safer Roads Petition

While Brampton has made significant investments in speed bumps, ASE cameras, and road safety measures, Councillor Santos has taken further action by introducing a city-endorsed motion urging the Province to strengthen driver training and licensing standards. The petition calls on the Ministry of Transportation to address unsafe, unqualified, and fraudulent drivers and instructors through improved training and oversight.

Road Safety

Councillor Santos has supported several initiatives to enhance road safety, including expanding Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras, creating Community Safety Zones with reduced speed limits, and implementing road diets and other traffic-calming measures. Additionally, she has pushed for better driver accountability through provincial policy changes, ensuring Brampton’s roads become safer for all.

Encampment Updates

To address the impact of encampments on public safety and community well-being, Councillor Santos has advocated for the relocation of individuals from unsafe areas, particularly flood-prone zones along the Etobicoke Creek Trail. She continues to push for coordinated action to ensure those affected receive proper support while maintaining public safety.
