At our March 11 Council meeting, I brought forward motion seconded by Councillor Martin Medeiros to begin implementing alternative safety measures in our school and community safety zones which was passed unanimously at Council.
With the recent cancellation of Automated Speed Enforcement by the Province, many municipalities, including the City of Brampton, were suddenly left without an important tool used to deter speeding in school zones. It was clear that we needed to act quickly to identify and implement practical, visible safety measures to protect children and families.
The discussion began after a delegation to Council introduced the SmartCrossingLED in-ground safety system, a technology designed to improve driver awareness through highly visible LED lighting embedded in the roadway at crosswalks and school-zone gateways. Following that presentation, Councillor Martin Medeiros moved a motion asking staff to review the technology and report back to Council. Building on that work, Council has now taken the next step by supporting pilot installation so the City can evaluate how this innovative safety infrastructure performs in real-world conditions.
These types of solutions use visual cues, including illuminated crosswalks, gateway lighting, and radar feedback signs, to alert drivers that they are entering a school safety zone and encourage them to slow down. The goal is simple: create safer crossings and better driver awareness to protect pedestrians.
