Peel Region of Police officially launch R.I.D.E along with M.A.D.D

Peel Regional Police has officially launched its Seasonal Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) Campaign in partnership with Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD). This annual campaign, part of ongoing collaborative efforts to reduce impaired driving, runs from November 16 to December 31, 2024.

“Every day, there are collisions that are reported on Brampton roads, and this year, 13 lives—many of them young men—have been tragically lost. These numbers are more than just statistics; they are a wake-up call. The City is deploying every available tool to reduce speeding and protect our neighborhoods, especially near schools and residential areas. But real change starts with us. We must be the ones to slow down, stop driving aggressively, and never drive impaired. Every time we get behind the wheel, we make a choice—let’s prioritize safety for our families, friends, and the entire Brampton community.”
– Rowena Santos, Chair, Community Services and Regional Councillor for Wards 1 & 5

To ensure the community is driving safely and responsibly, additional officers from Road Safety Services and other divisions have been deployed to increase roadside checks throughout the holiday season. Last year, the campaign resulted in:
  • 155 impaired-related charges
  • 12,000+ vehicles investigated
  • 116 drivers receiving three-day suspensions

While the Seasonal R.I.D.E. Campaign increases strategic enforcement during the holidays, R.I.D.E. is a year-round commitment by Peel Regional Police to educate the public about the dangers of impaired driving. The campaign emphasizes awareness and prevention, urging community members to take responsibility for road safety by:

  • Not driving after consuming alcohol or drugs
  • Planning ahead with a designated driver, alternate accommodations, or public transportation

“Impaired driving puts everyone at risk and it can devastate families. Peel Regional Police wants everyone in our community to have a safe and happy Holiday season with friends and family. There is no excuse for driving impaired. Please plan ahead and protect yourself, your loved ones, and our community,” said Deputy Chief Mark Dapat.

“Impaired driving is not an ‘accident’—it is a choice that someone makes, and it devastates families. Please, this holiday season, make the right choice and do not drive impaired. Plan ahead for a safe way home. Together, we can all have a safe and happy holiday season,” said Dawn Regan, Chief Operating Officer, MADD Canada. For more information, visit madd.ca.
