Brampton officials call on feds, Ontario to help curb trafficking of international students

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and city officials are calling on federal and provincial governments to address the vulnerability of international students to exploitation and human trafficking. They propose a three-year pilot project to create a support hub for students, offering help with housing, employment, and mental health. Brampton, home to the country’s largest share of international students, faces significant challenges, including unsafe housing conditions and coercion by exploitative landlords. Officials stress that systemic changes to visa requirements and federal guidelines are needed to protect students from further harm.
