A Community Ride to Explore Brampton’s Expanding Mobility Network

On Tuesday, October 1st, local cyclists and community members gathered at Andrew McCandless Park for an exciting community bike ride led by Regional Councillor Santos and Transportation Planning Manager Nelson Cadete.

The event attracted participants from the neighbourhood, including residents and representatives from Scooty, a Canadian electric scooter and bike rental company that provided the opportunity to try out their e-bikes and scooters for the community.

The ride kicked off from the Andrew McCandless Park parking lot, embarking on an 11-kilometre journey through Brampton’s growing network of bike lanes, multi-use paths, and active transportation infrastructure.

Cyclists explored bike-friendly routes, making several stops to highlight significant features along the way. One notable stop was the park’s bike repair station, a vital resource for local cyclists, where riders had the opportunity to connect with residents and discuss their experiences with the new cycling facilities.

Participants traversed key areas such as the Elbern Markell bike lanes and the multi-use path along Bovaird Drive, showcasing how Brampton is transforming into a more mobility friendly city. Additional stops along the Williams Parkway Boulevard Bike Lane and the James Potter multi-use path further demonstrated the city’s commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable cycling environment.

Jaipaul from the Brampton Board of Trade joined the ride and highlighted the significance of the developing cycling network in the city’s northwest. He remarked, “This network links homes, schools, shopping, community centres, and public transportation, including the Mount Pleasant GO Transit station. These initiatives give residents the opportunity to leave their cars at home and safely travel year-round. It’s great to see steps being taken to reduce congestion, promote healthy living, and build vibrant, thriving communities that businesses need.”

The community bike ride not only celebrated the progress made in mobility infrastructure but also encouraged community engagement in shaping Brampton’s active transportation network.
As the city launched it program for micro mobility as a Shared E-scooter pilot program in 2023 which exceeded expectation and has seen positive community feedback. This mobility network supports all kinds of transport options like e-bikes, e-scooters and motorized wheelchair hence, try to strike a balance for safety of all on the road. Participants left with a greater appreciation of how these initiatives contribute to a more sustainable and connected city.
