Across Peel, more families are supporting loved ones who are aging, living with dementia, frailty, disability, or chronic illness. Respite care at the Seniors Health and Wellness Village (SHWV) at Peel Manor exists to support them proactively, before stress becomes crisis.
What is Overnight Respite Care?
Overnight respite care provides planned, short-term stays (7-14 days) that allow caregivers time to rest, work, travel, or focus on their own health, knowing their loved one is safe, supported, and engaged. Clients receive personalized care in a warm, purpose-built environment, while caregivers gain peace of mind and a renewed sense of balance.
What Clients Can Expect
During a respite stay at the SHWV, clients receive:
- A private bedroom and private bathroom.
- Three nutritious meals and snacks daily, tailored to dietary needs.
- Support with daily living, including bathing, dressing, and washroom assistance.
- Medication assistance from trained staff.
- Access to Adult Day Services and recreational programming.
- The reassurance of a Registered Nurse on-site.
Who Respite Care Supports
Respite care is appropriate for adults (18+) who are frail, living with dementia, a disability, chronic illness, or other health conditions, and who have a valid Ontario health card. It is not emergency care or rehabilitation; it is pre planned support designed to prevent burnout and sustain caregiving over time.
Why This Matters Now
Peel’s population is aging rapidly. By 2041, one in five residents will be over 65. At the same time, over 90% of Ontario seniors want to stay in their own homes as long as possible. Respite care is a critical part of making that goal achievable. With $900,000 in new annual provincial funding, Peel Region can now ensure overnight respite care at the SHWV is available to families who need it.

Putting Cost Into Perspective
For the sake of comparison, a 7-14 day hotel stay typically costs several hundred dollars per night, quickly adding up to thousands of dollars for just the room! A hotel stay does not include personal care, meals tailored to dietary needs, medication assistance, nursing oversight, or daytime programming.
Overnight respite care at the SHWV:
- Costs about $82 per day, including Adult Day Services activities.
- May offer subsidies for those with low income.
- Can be used multiple times per year, subject to availability.
In other words, respite care delivers comprehensive, 24 hour support at a fraction of the cost of a hotel stay, while offering families something truly special: peace of mind.
