Statement from Councillor Santos on the incident at Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver, BC

“This incident in Vancouver has shook our Filipino community across Canada. I’m still trying to process that this happened at a Filipino Festival meant to celebrate the joy and love of our culture. After speaking with community leaders and upon personal reflection, many of us are wondering what we did.

Those who know Filipinos understand that we love our community, love our neighbours, love to work hard, love to sing and dance, love caring passionately for others and giving generously. Our modest upbringing keeps us humble but when we celebrate, we celebrate… this is why the tragic incident today is so difficult for us to comprehend.

Although this happened in Vancouver, our entire Filipino community is hurting. In the Philippines, the “Bayanihan” spirit is one of communal unity, helping others without expecting rewards, to achieve a certain goal. In earlier days, when houses were made of lighter materials such as coconut leaves, Bayanihan also meant helping one’s neighbours move their house — literally.

To our Filipino family in Vancouver, our bayanihan spirit is with you in mourning across the country. We are here to carry this grief with you.

Salamat (thank you) to Mayor Patrick Brown, City of Brampton and all who have reached out offering condolences to our community.” – Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor Wards 1 & 5, City of Brampton
