Councillor Rowena Santos Responds to Province-Wide Ban on Speed Cameras

The Premier Should Focus on Addressing His Concerns Not Eliminate a Proven Safety Tool

Brampton, ON — Councillor Rowena Santos is voicing strong opposition to Premier Doug Ford’s decision to ban Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) across Ontario, warning that the move will jeopardize public safety and undermine years of progress in Brampton.

“I am deeply disappointed by the Premier’s decision,” said Councillor Santos. “Brampton has just completed installing new cameras and has made significant investments in this program, which has already reduced speeding, prevented collisions, and protected our most vulnerable residents. To dismantle this progress not only undermines public safety but also wastes taxpayer dollars.”

Santos noted that while the Premier can be stubborn, he has also shown compassion and the willingness to change course when he recognizes a decision is not in the public interest. “This must be one of those times,” she said. “If the Premier has concerns about how ASE has been implemented in some municipalities, that is no reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Instead of eliminating a proven safety tool, the Province should focus on strengthen fairness, transparency, and accountability, and as the Premier, he has the power to do it.”

The Councillor emphasized that the Premier’s concerns about enforcement being overly punitive can be addressed without removing ASE. “In Brampton, we have already demonstrated how to do this right,” Santos explained. “Thresholds for ticketing are based on best practices, expert consultation, and global benchmarks. Signage is posted at least 90 days before activation, and all camera locations are published online to ensure transparency. Adjusting what he feels are artificially low speed limits, raising enforcement thresholds, and relying on data-driven targeting are all ways the Premier can accomplish his goals while keeping our streets safe.”

Santos urged the Premier to work with municipalities rather than act unilaterally. “Brampton is very close to getting this right, and I urge Premier Ford to meet with Mayor Patrick Brown and other municipal leaders to find a balanced compromise,” she said. “As a father of four, the Premier knows the importance of keeping families safe on our roads. The challenge now is not to abandon what works, but to find a solution that maintains safety while addressing concerns.

Brampton will continue to fight for our residents, protect the investments we have made, and advocate for a fair, transparent approach that saves lives.”
