Councillor Rowena Santos Calls on Premier to Compromise with Municipalities, Maintain Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Program

Brampton, ON – Councillor Rowena Santos is urging the Province to maintain Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) as a critical road safety measure, while ensuring the program is implemented fairly and transparently.

“Automated Speed Enforcement saves lives. It is not about revenue, it is about protecting our children and keeping our community safe,” said Councillor Santos.

ASE has been proven to reduce speeding, prevent collisions, and protect the most vulnerable residents, particularly children and seniors in school zones, parks, and community areas. Since 2020, Brampton has led the way in adopting ASE, ensuring cameras are only installed in clearly marked Community Safety Zones with reasonable thresholds before a ticket is issued. Locations are posted well in advance to give drivers every opportunity to slow down.

Councillor Santos stressed that while she does not support Premier Ford’s proposal to eliminate ASE, she believes the program must be implemented fairly.

“I do not support eliminating ASE. The solution is to make the program fair, transparent, and clearly focused on safety, not revenue. In Brampton, we have already taken steps to strike that balance,” she said.

Residents in Brampton have voiced strong support for ASE, recognizing it as a trusted tool that saves lives. Councillor Santos emphasized the need for compromise should the Province move ahead with changes.

“If the Premier moves forward with changes, municipalities must at least be allowed to keep ASE in school zones, and the Province must refund the investments we have already made. The challenge now is finding the right solution to get us there,” added Santos.

Councillor Santos concluded with a personal note:

“As a father of four, the Premier knows the importance of keeping families safe on our roads. I believe we share the same goal of protecting residents, the task now is finding the right solution together.”

Councillor looks forward to responding further after the Premier announces his decision on the future of ASE.
