Councillor Santos Makes Final Appeal to Premier Ford: Work With Us, Not Against Us on Speed Camera Compromise

Brampton, ON — Regional Councillor Rowena Santos is making a final appeal to Premier Doug Ford to work with municipalities, not against them, following the Province’s plan to eliminate Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) across Ontario.

“Mr. Premier— I know you’re angry. So am I,” said Councillor Santos. “It’s wrong for some municipalities to issue tickets for going just a few kilometres over the limit— I want you to put a stop to that. But it’s also wrong and dangerous for motorists to stunt drive, especially in school zones— I want you to put a stop to that too.”

Santos highlighted extreme cases of speeding captured by Brampton’s ASE program.

“As a mom, I find this completely unacceptable. As a father, I know the Premier agrees with me,” she said.

Councillor Santos emphasized that the solution is not to eliminate ASE but to fix legitimate concerns through provincial regulation— the Premier has the power to do that.

“There’s a reasonable middle ground,” she added. “Brampton and other municipalities implemented this public safety tool correctly. Brampton along with many other municipalities implemented ASE with reasonable thresholds and a majority in school zones. We continue to ask for the Premier to prioritize public safety and allow speed cameras in school zones, set thresholds that target excessive speeding and stunt driving — not minor infractions, and establish fines that deter reckless driving while ensuring fairness.”

Santos noted that while Brampton uses other traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps and roundabouts, they are not always practical. ASE has proven to be one of the most effective tools for reducing speeding, preventing collisions, and protecting vulnerable residents.

“With the Legislature set to return shortly, I’m urging the Premier, before making a final decision, meet with Mayor Patrick Brown and other municipal leaders to find a balanced, province-wide compromise,” said Santos.

“Brampton is very close to getting this right. The challenge now is not to abandon what works, but to find a solution that maintains safety while addressing legitimate concerns.”
