As Canada heads into a pivotal federal election amid U.S. trade tensions, protecting long-term prosperity must be the priority. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is calling for a National Prosperity Partnership—a unified approach across all levels of government to support local communities, the true engines of economic growth.
“Canada’s strength comes from within—its people, resources, industries, and communities,” said FCM President Rebecca Bligh. “But Canadians are facing deep uncertainty. It’s time for bold conversations about our future.”
FCM urges a long-term strategy that:
- Aligns infrastructure, housing, and workforce investments with national economic goals
- Modernizes how municipalities are funded to meet today’s intersecting challenges
- Establishes regular, high-level engagement between the Prime Minister and municipal leaders
“Our outdated fiscal system holds us back,” added Bligh. “Without stronger local capacity, Canada risks falling behind globally.”
This election is a turning point to reinvest in communities, create jobs, and build inclusive prosperity across urban, rural, and northern regions.
FCM represents over 2,100 municipal governments, speaking for 92% of Canadians.
