Plea for forced ‘compassionate intervention’ addiction treatment in Brampton heads to Queens Park

Mayor Patrick Brown and Brampton City Council are pushing the province to introduce involuntary treatment laws for those with severe mental health and addiction issues, framing it as “compassionate intervention.” Peel police report 12,000 mental health apprehensions annually and over 18,000 overdose incidents between 2022 and 2024. Despite the civil liberty concerns, police, paramedics, and Brown argue the measure is necessary to address the increasing number of calls and fatalities related to fentanyl and opioid overdoses. The motion has been passed, and Brown will bring the issue to Peel Regional Council for further discussion.
