Regional Councillor Brampton Wards 1 & 5

Owner of home where fire killed 4 in Brampton pushes back on mayor’s ‘absentee landlord’ claim

• The homeowner of 12 Banas Way rejects Mayor Patrick Brown’s statements that he was an “absentee landlord” who refused inspections, insisting the property had no alterations and was rented as a single-family home.
• Through counsel, the landlord says only five tenants were authorized under the lease and any additional occupants were unknown to him, adding inspectors were never denied access.
• The fire has intensified scrutiny of unsafe rental conditions, prompting council to fast-track expanding the RRL program citywide; the property was outside the original pilot zone.
• Brampton’s RRL carries no fees for 2025–26 and includes free smoke alarms, as the city pushes stronger oversight of rental safety following the fatal blaze.
