Ontario court strikes down Ford government’s plan to remove Toronto bike lanes

An Ontario judge has ruled the province’s plan to remove 19 km of bike lanes in Toronto unconstitutional, affirming it endangers public safety. The case, brought by Cycle Toronto and local cyclists, challenged the province’s attempt to replace bike lanes with vehicle lanes. Justice Schabas found no evidence that removing the lanes would reduce traffic congestion. Instead, expert testimony showed protected bike lanes improve safety and ease congestion by offering a viable transportation alternative.
