Female international students targeted for prostitution by Brampton landlords: Councillor

Councillor Rowena Santos claims that international students in Brampton, especially women, are being exploited by landlords through predatory rental ads, some even prostituting them for rent. The lack of proper student housing has led to many illegal basement apartments and unsafe living conditions. Santos highlighted the tragic outcomes, including pregnancies and suicides among young women facing these pressures. The city has introduced a Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) program and hired more bylaw officers to combat these issues. However, Santos notes that the Landlord Tenant Board need to better the response time which can help hampers the city’s efforts.
