In a bid to combat climate change and promote cleaner communities, the Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities are investing $10 million in retrofitting the Susan Fennell Sportsplex in Brampton, Ontario. These upgrades aim to transform the nearly 30-year-old facility into a state-of-the-art zero-carbon establishment by electrifying gas-powered equipment, installing a geothermal system, and upgrading various systems like ice rink refrigeration plants and lighting. The initiative, part of the Green Municipal Fund’s Community Buildings Retrofit program, is expected to reduce operating costs and carbon emissions by 91% annually, with the remaining 9% savings achieved through carbon offsets. This project not only sets an example for other recreational facilities but also aligns with the broader goal of transitioning to a net-zero economy and building sustainable communities across Canada.
