Brampton now fining store owners $100 for shopping carts abandoned on city property

The City of Brampton has introduced a $100 fine for retailers each time staff collect an abandoned shopping cart from public spaces. The measure follows concerns raised by Rowena Santos about carts being left in parks, transit areas, waterways and stormwater ponds. City staff currently retrieve about 400–500 carts annually, costing public resources to collect and return them to stores. The new bylaw shifts that cost to retailers and may generate $40,000–$50,000 annually, while council also studies requiring anti-theft cart technology.
