Brampton Moves to Curb Overcrowding: ‘Safe Housing for All Is a Must,’ Says Councillor Rowena Santos

Brampton City Council is considering new rental regulations to tackle overcrowding and illegal subletting by imposing occupancy limits on rental properties. This follows an update on the RRL pilot program, which has inspected over 4,700 units and issued over $83,500 in fines since January. Councillor Rowena Santos proposed incorporating these limits into existing registration systems to prevent unsafe conditions and illegal lodging. The city is also contemplating a pause on new basement suites due to safety concerns, with recommendations on enforcement and penalties expected soon
