Brampton expands licensing project to cracking down on illegal rentals

Brampton is broadening its Residential Rental Licensing pilot to more wards as the city strengthens enforcement against unsafe and illegal rentals.
The program has already led to thousands of inspections, hundreds of penalties, and improved compliance with building and fire codes.
The expansion comes days after a deadly house fire in a non-pilot ward, prompting Councillor Rowena Santos to stress that unsafe conditions exist city-wide.
City officials say stronger licensing, inspections, and provincial support are needed to keep tenants safe and ensure landlords meet basic standards.
