Peel Regional Police Receives Funding for Critical Air Support

The Peel Regional Police (PRP) has received funding from the Ontario Government to procure a helicopter. This addition will significantly enhance our police response capabilities and greatly assist our officers in combating crime and ensuring the safety of our community.

Since December 2023, PRP has been collaborating with the Ministry of the Solicitor General to lead and develop a Joint Air Support Unit (JASU). This initiative aims to secure new helicopters for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), Ottawa Police Service (OPS), and Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS).

The event was hosted by Premier Ford and representatives from the Government of Ontario in Peel for the funding announcement. The JASU funding includes over $10 million for PRP to acquire a helicopter, along with more than $2 million annually for operational costs over the next five years.

The new helicopter will greatly assist PRP’s operations by enabling regular patrols, enhancing suspect and vehicle pursuits, aiding in search efforts for missing persons, increasing road safety enforcement—particularly regarding street racing and stunt driving—and improving overall public safety.

In collaboration with the Region of Peel, we as a city are leading the procurement process to secure helicopters on behalf of our municipal partner agencies.

We extend our gratitude to the Provincial Government for their investment and ongoing support of policing and community safety. The addition of a helicopter represents a significant step forward in modernizing policing in Peel Region, as we continue to strive to be the most progressive, innovative, and inclusive police service.
