Regional Councillor Brampton Wards 1 & 5

UPDATE: Councillor Santos Calls for Accountability Following Comments by Regeneration Outreach CEO Ted Brown

I was disappointed to read in the comments to media from Regeneration CEO Ted Brown, which reflect a continued lack of accountability for the ongoing issues affecting residents and businesses near 156 Main Street North.

This is not about turning our backs on people in need. It is about ensuring that services for vulnerable residents are delivered safely, responsibly, and in partnership with those who have the mandate to do so. For over a year, the City of Brampton has worked closely with the Region of Peel, their main funder, to identify a suitable location to address homelessness, mental health, and addictions in our downtown.

While the City has gone above and beyond its jurisdiction to help facilitate relocation, Regeneration has yet to demonstrate any initiative to find a new space or present an updated model of service delivery. What steps has Regeneration taken to identify a new location? Have they reached out to their primary funder, the Region of Peel, to discuss an improved model? Have they made efforts to collaborate with other nonprofits, as organizations like Knights Table have done successfully?

I am concerned that instead of working toward solutions, Regeneration appears to expect the City, who does not fund or oversee homelessness services, to solve a problem that falls within their and the Region’s responsibility. Meanwhile, the ongoing safety concerns, both during and outside of their hours of operation, continue to affect nearby residents, schools, and small businesses.

The City’s position has been consistent: compassion and accountability must go hand in hand. We will continue to support the Region of Peel as it engages directly with Regeneration’s Board to address operational and safety concerns. I understand that the Region’s Commissioner of Human Services will be meeting with the Regeneration Board, and I look forward to receiving an update from that discussion to share with residents.

Our goal remains clear; ensure vulnerable residents continue to receive the support they need while restoring safety, dignity, and livability to the surrounding community.
