Brampton Charter : A New Revolution for International Student

Brampton, ON (December 18, 2023)–  The City of Brampton and Sheridan College have solidified their commitment to elevating the international student experience with the launch of the Brampton Charter for Improving the International Student Experience.

At Sheridan’s Davis Campus in Brampton, Mayor Patrick Brown and Sheridan’s President and Vice Chancellor Dr. Janet Morrison have officially endorsed the Charter’s Guiding Principles, marking a significant step towards effecting positive change for international students studying in Canada.

The creation of the Charter follows extensive community engagement, including a roundtable discussion and an international student summit. It represents a collaborative effort to address key issues, enhance accountability, and foster positive outcomes for international students.

Joined by Brampton City Councilors, Commissioner of Community Services Bill Boyes, and Indus Community Services CEO Gurpreet Malhotra, the signing ceremony symbolizes a collective commitment from over 35 Brampton-based organizations, including social service agencies, educational institutions, and cultural organizations.

The Charter aims to promote collaboration among stakeholders, fostering a supportive community network dedicated to enhancing the international student experience and ensuring a smooth transition into Canadian society.

Key Guiding Principles of the Charter include:
  • Appreciating the diverse and multifaceted nature of international student experiences.
  • Recognizing the unique contributions of international students and their enriching impact on the learning environment.
  • Acknowledging the various challenges and obstacles faced by international students.
  • Adopting a holistic approach to addressing the needs of international students, encompassing various aspects of well-being.
  • Responding through collective engagement to address gaps and enhance the overall student experience.

“We are proud to embark on this collaborative journey to support International learners.” remarked Dr. Morrison. “This is truly community work, done in partnership with over 35 organizations, to ensure international students have the opportunity to thrive in the classroom and beyond. None of us could do it alone, and we are grateful for the way so many have come together as part of the Charter.”

Mayor Patrick Brown added to these sentiments, stating, “We are excited to bring meaningful change for how international students experience life and study in Brampton. They are an important part of our community, adding to the rich and beautiful mosaic of our city. I encourage all post-secondary institutions to take greater responsibility for their students and be more accountable. I applaud Sheridan for their leadership and express my sincere thanks to all our community partners as this was the culmination of several years of work by many to create this charter.

The Charter is the culmination of extensive dialogue and collaboration, with over 200 stakeholders participating in the July 2022 International Student Summit. Moving forward, the community is encouraged to engage with the Charter and provide feedback to further enhance the international student experience.
