Brampton Breaks Ground on New Peel Memorial Hospital

Today, the City of Brampton proudly celebrated a historic milestone with the official groundbreaking event for Brampton’s second hospital at the Peel Memorial site. This long-awaited development will significantly expand health care services for the city’s growing population, marking a major step forward in strengthening Brampton’s health care infrastructure. The event also coincides with the 100th anniversary of Peel Memorial, recognizing its century-long legacy of serving the community.

“After many years of work and advocacy with William Osler Health System to the Government of Ontario, we finally broke ground on the Peel Memorial site, for our much-needed second hospital.

Health care services in Brampton have been chronically underfunded for decades, with only one hospital and emergency department for a population that has grown to over 800,000 residents—the third-largest city in the province. Each year, we are adding another 45,000 residents. While we are grateful for the provincial support and this groundbreaking milestone for Peel Memorial, we have much work ahead to ensure this project is completed and that the province continues to prioritize the health care needs of our booming population with the planning for a third hospital.

Under the leadership of Mayor Patrick Brown and the support of Council, we have resiliently pushed for our second hospital. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, The City of Brampton declared a healthcare emergency and launched a Fair Deal for Health Care campaign in 2019. This work is ongoing, and I will continue to push for more investments to get our health care services on par with other municipalities.”

The Province of Ontario has committed an unprecedented $2.3 billion towards this vital project, ensuring that Brampton’s health care capacity meets the demands of today and the future. The development of Brampton’s second hospital is made possible by the leadership and vision of William Osler Health System and its Foundation.

Building on this commitment, Brampton’s 2025 Budget prioritizes investments that will strengthen the city’s health care infrastructure. The City has earmarked $10 million for the TMU School of Medicine, to expand medical education and innovation. Additionally, $81.1 million in reserves to date and $4.9 million in levies have been dedicated to supporting the transformation of Peel Memorial, reinforcing Brampton’s efforts to secure accessible, high-quality health care for its residents.

Community support continues to play a critical role in advancing health care in Brampton. Last year, Mayor Brown’s Hockey Night in Brampton raised a record-breaking $14 million for the William Osler Health System Foundation, in support of the new hospital. As one of the largest community charity hockey games in Canadian history, the event highlights the strength and generosity of the Brampton community and its commitment to building a stronger local health care system. This year’s event will take place August 20, 2025.

The City of Brampton remains committed to working in partnership with all levels of government, industry partners and the community to support the continued growth and development of Brampton’s health care system. Today’s groundbreaking is just the beginning of an exciting and advanced future for health care in Brampton.
