Brampton Unveils Inaugural Public Art Strategy: An Artful Future

The City of Brampton launches its first Public Art Strategy. Titled Brampton: An Artful Future, this five-year plan aims to establish a cohesive and strategic approach to developing and managing the City of Brampton’s Public Art Program. The strategy’s goal is to transform public spaces into inviting, inclusive areas that celebrate Brampton’s unique character.

Oo·tsísteˀ /ishkode, a mural by artist Mo Thunder on the exterior of Brampton Fire Station 207, exemplifies the City’s public art collection.
Recognized as a vital tool for building a vibrant, prosperous, and inclusive city, Brampton’s public art collection boasts over 50 murals, permanent and temporary installations, and civic memorials.

“As Chair of Community Services, I’ve proudly led the charge in crafting our inaugural public art strategy. Our steady investments in public art not only enrich local neighbourhoods but also offer priceless opportunities for local artists to showcase their talents. In 2023 alone, we introduced 34 new public artworks across Brampton, underscoring our unyielding dedication to nurturing creativity and cultural vibrancy within our community. I’m thrilled to see how these artistic expressions will continue to inspire and unite us all.”

– Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor, Wards 1 & 5; Chair, Community Services, City of Brampton

The City remains committed to showcasing talented local artists with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Last year, Brampton introduced 34 new public artworks, including the oo·tsísteˀ / ishkode mural by Mo Thunder. Additionally, the City provided training and mentorship to 12 artists, enhancing their skills and opportunities within the art community.

This comprehensive strategy, shaped by input from over 1,000 Brampton artists, residents, and City staff, embodies the community’s diverse values and needs. Key local arts organizations such as the Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) and Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives (PAMA) played crucial roles in its development. The research process included exploring public art strategies from across Canada to identify and integrate best practices into Brampton: An Artful Future.
