Brampton front gardens take centre stage in annual recognition program

Each summer, front gardens across Brampton bring colour, care and character to local streets, turning everyday neighbourhoods into welcoming spaces for residents, visitors and the community.

To celebrate the residents behind these vibrant and thoughtfully cared-for spaces, the City of Brampton, in partnership with the Brampton Horticultural Society and Chinguacousy Garden Club, invites residents to submit photos of their front gardens through the annual Gardens of Brampton Recognition Program.

“The annual Gardens of Brampton Recognition Program acknowledges the beautiful work of residents who make Brampton even better. They take time and effort with their personal gardens and elevate their neighbourhood’s character. We greatly appreciate all who participate in this acknowledgement and encourage all residents to be inspired by their work.”

– Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor, Wards 1 & 5

Running from July 1 to August 1, the program encourages friendly competition while recognizing residents whose hard work, creativity and dedication add beauty, pride and community to Brampton’s neighbourhoods. This year, the City is also collaborating with Brampton Library to honour residents whose gardens are selected for recognition. Visitors can explore gardening-themed displays at select library locations, featuring gardening books and City of Brampton Gardens of Brampton bookmarks designed to spark new ideas and invite more residents into the celebration.

Now in its fifth season, the Gardens of Brampton Front Garden Recognition Program celebrates community pride and the important role residents play in enhancing Brampton’s streetscapes through thoughtful gardening and landscape design.

How to participate

Residents are invited to submit one photo of their front garden between July 1 and August 1 for a chance to be recognized through the program. Residents can submit their photo through the online registration form.

To help showcase gardens at their best, photos should:

• Capture the entire front garden in a landscape (horizontal) format.

• Be taken from the curb to show the full garden space.

• Be taken during daylight hours.

• Exclude people, pets and visible house numbers.

• Be submitted as a high-resolution JPG or PNG file.

What judges look for

Volunteer judges from the Brampton Horticultural Society and Chinguacousy Garden Club will evaluate submissions based on:

Visual Appeal: Overall visual impact, colour, texture, harmony and balance.

Overall Appearance: Effective use of space and design coordination between plants and other landscape elements.

General Maintenance: Quality of care, including pruning, weed and disease control, while incorporating environmentally friendly practices such as mulching and drought-tolerant planting.

Individuality: Creative use of special features such as ponds, garden sculptures, rockeries or themed gardens.

Judging will take place in August and residents whose gardens are selected for recognition will be contacted in early September.

Here are a few simple tips that can help your garden thrive and support a greener Brampton

• Pay attention to how sunlight moves through your yard before selecting plants. Most vegetables, herbs and fruit-bearing plants require at least six hours of sunlight each day.

• Water your garden regularly, especially in the morning.

• Use mulch around trees and shrubs to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.

• Attract pollinators by planting flowers such as Black-Eyed Susans, Salvia, Hyssop and Bergamot.

• Remove spent blooms and prune dead branches to encourage healthy growth.

• Keep garbage and recycling bins stored neatly to the side of your home.

Additional gardening tips and tutorials are available through the City of Brampton’s Parks webpage.
