No more protected bike lanes on busy Brampton street, Council votes

Brampton Council approved the removal of protected bike lanes on Howden Boulevard, led by a motion from Coun. Rod Power, despite staff advising the change will worsen congestion and speeding. Only Coun. Rowena Santos voted against the decision, arguing it undermines the city’s mobility and safety goals. The city will allocate $337,000 for lane removal and an additional $393,000 for future relocation and a new multi‑use path. Staff cautioned that restoring four traffic lanes will increase vehicle speeds and reduce cycling use of the corridor. Sharrows and a multi‑use path will replace the protected lanes, even though sharrows are considered a significant downgrade for cyclist safety.
