After Deadly House Fire, Councillor Santos Pushes for City-Wide Rental Licensing to Protect Brampton Residents

A deadly house fire in Brampton has prompted Councillor Rowena Santos to push for rapid, city-wide implementation of the Residential Rental Licensing Program to protect tenants in every neighbourhood. Santos says the expanded program—backed by added fire prevention officers and stronger inspection tools—is essential for landlord accountability and basic safety standards. She warns that the Province mandated tens of thousands of new rental units without providing cities the funding or authority needed to ensure they are safe and legal. Santos is urging the Province to provide long-term resources, stronger legislative powers, and a true partnership to prevent future tragedies and safeguard Brampton’s rental housing.
