Regional Councillor Brampton Wards 1 & 5

STATEMENT: Status of PAMA

“The point of this motion is to ensure that the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA), which has always been located in Brampton, can thrive as part of a broader, collaborative effort to strengthen the arts and culture ecosystem across the Region and more specifically within the city’s growing downtown cultural hub. The goal is to modernize the governance and funding model so that PAMA can align with Brampton’s Culture Master Plan and deliver more responsive, community-driven space and programming for residents.

In addition to the work being done with PAMA, the City of Brampton continues to invest in modern, inclusive cultural spaces, from developing a dedicated Arts & Culture Centre at the Flower City Community Campus to supporting new Artist Studios in partnership with the Brampton Arts Organization, ensuring that residents have access to diverse, high-quality creative experiences. Brampton’s participation in the PAMA transition framework reflects our shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage, expanding access, and building a sustainable future for the arts in Brampton and across Peel.

I understand that some community members and those connected to PAMA may have concerns. That is why the transition is being carefully planned through a working group made up of the Region and all three local municipalities. This process will ensure continued collaboration, protect the collection, and maintain access for residents across Peel.

Staff are currently developing a detailed Transition and Business Planning Framework, which will come back to all councils in 2026 for review and ratification before any changes take effect in 2027. Until then, PAMA will continue to operate under the Region of Peel.”
