Councillor Santos Urges Premier Ford to Show Leadership Not Dictate One-Sided Terms on Speed Camera Ban

I have read the letter Premier Ford wrote to Mayor Brown, Mayor Meed Ward, and other municipalities doubling down on his decision to unilaterally ban Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) in Ontario.

While I understand the Premier’s concerns about fairness and transparency, this decision is deeply disappointing. Public safety should never become a casualty of politics. From the beginning, I have said that I respect the Premier’s concerns about how Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) has been implemented in some municipalities, and I agree that the program must always be about safety, not revenue.

Now is the time for collaboration, not confrontation.

I am calling on the Premier to bring mayors and councillors together to find a balanced, province-wide approach that ensures ASE is a tool for safety, not a cash grab.

In Brampton, we have demonstrated that Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) can be implemented fairly and effectively to change driver behaviour, prevent collisions, and protect both children and seniors. Brampton Council remains committed to ensuring that every dollar collected through ASE is reinvested directly into road safety and traffic-calming measures — not into general revenue.

Let’s work together to fix what needs improvement rather than eliminating a program that saves lives.

My Message to the Premier

Mr. Premier, you have the power to strengthen ASE through regulation, not weaken it through elimination. Use that power to establish consistent thresholds, fair fines, and clear accountability standards across all municipalities.

Brampton and many other cities stand ready to work with you to make ASE fairer, more transparent, and more effective.

Residents want their tax dollars invested in safer streets, not used to dismantle programs that protect children, seniors, and families.

Mr. Premier, you have shown a willingness to compromise on issues that matter to Ontario residents in the past, now is the time to show that same leadership.

Until new legislation is introduced, Brampton will continue to stand up for evidence-based safety measures and amplify the voices of residents who believe in strengthening, not abandoning road safety.
