Brampton has introduced a new incentive program to boost rental housing, with up to 100% development charge reductions for two-plus bedroom purpose-built units. Mayor Patrick Brown said the move tackles the city’s “acute shortage,” where a 1% vacancy rate has forced many into overcrowded basement rentals. Councillors Rowena Santos and Dennis Keenan, who introduced the motion, stressed that the program will reduce reliance on ARUs, improve safety, and ensure new rentals stay rentals for 25 years. Developers and industry leaders praised the initiative as a “game changer” that will attract hundreds of millions in investment and bring much-needed family-friendly rental supply.
