Organized crime and auto theft key issues at Canada-wide safety summit planned in Brampton

Brampton City Council has passed a motion, backed by Peel Police and led by Councillor Rowena Santos, to host a National Public Safety Summit in early 2026. The summit would bring together law enforcement, justice ministers, and municipal leaders from across Canada to create a coordinated national response to auto theft, guns and gangs, human trafficking, bail reform, and border enforcement. This move follows Chief Duraiappah’s well-received FCM presentation and Brampton’s longstanding advocacy since 2021 for stronger federal-local cooperation on public safety. With Peel Police’s support and Santos’ re-election to the FCM board, Brampton is well-positioned to drive urgent, unified solutions to a national crisis.
