Councillor Santos and Peel Police Champion call for National Public Safety Summit

Councillor Rowena Santos has tabled a motion backing Peel Police’s call for a 2026 National Public Safety Summit, following the $48M “Project Pelican” cocaine bust and Project Outsource’s crackdown on extortion and tow truck violence. The summit aims to unify all orders of government, police chiefs, and justice ministers in crafting a national action plan to address organized crime, bail reform, border enforcement, and violent repeat offenders. Backed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Brampton has been pushing for stronger federal-local coordination since 2021, reflecting resident concerns highlighted in Santos’ public safety survey. Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah says today’s complex threats demand urgent, unified national leadership—“lives depend on it,” says Santos.
