The City of Brampton’s Aquatic Certification Program is helping residents take the plunge into rewarding careers as lifeguards and swim instructors – at no cost.
“This program removes financial barriers and opens the door to opportunities at the city. Being a lifeguard is about more than just swimming—it builds confidence, leadership, and opens pathways to careers in education, emergency services, medicine, and more. I’m excited to promote this initiative at the City, it’s a great starting job that gives young people valuable skills.
— Councillor Rowena Santos, Wards 1 & 5, Chair, Community Services
If you’re a Brampton resident aged 14 or older and a strong swimmer, you may be eligible to receive FREE training and certifications that can lead to part-time employment with the City. The City’s Aquatic Certification Training Program has helped hundreds of residents complete their lifeguard and swim instructor certifications. Originally a response to the nationwide shortage of lifeguards, this community initiative has been recognized for its efforts in reducing financial barriers and providing lifesaving education to Brampton residents so that they too can partake in drowning prevention efforts in their community.
Program Highlights:
✓ 100% of course fees covered upon successful swim skills assessment
✓ Opportunities for paid part-time employment as a lifeguard or swim instructor
✓ Experience that builds confidence, leadership, and transferable skills for careers in education, emergency services, medicine, and more
Certifications include:
- Bronze Medallion
- Bronze Cross
- Standard and Emergency First Aid
- National Lifeguard certification
To get started, residents must register for a swim skills assessment with an aquatic professional at a local Recreation Centre.
Assessment includes:
Swimming 400 metres in under 12 minutes
Retrieving an object from the bottom of the pool
Demonstrating swim strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke
Performing lifesaving kicks: whip, scissor, and eggbeater
Assessment requirements may vary depending on the certification level.
