Regional Councillor Brampton Wards 1 & 5

Tackling Litter and Beautifying Our Community with Local Hero Suzie White

In Brampton, some areas have unfortunately become known for the accumulation and overflow of garbage. These hotspots negatively impact our quality of life. As a city council, we’ve implemented important initiatives like the Residential Rental Licensing and Parks Beautification programs—designed to monitor and address these issues proactively. More importantly, our city is better when residents take initiative in helping to address this ongoing issue.

A Community Hero in Action: Suzie White

Recently, Suzie White from the Nelson St West Neighbourhood Association submitted a service request through the city’s 311Brampton service  about litter along the Orangeville Railway greenspace behind the buildings at 45 Railroad Street. Suzie then contacted my office and also raised concerns about several other problematic properties in the area. Within 48 hours, our Parks team assessed the site and prioritized the clean-up of the railway greenspace. The transformation shown below was remarkable!

The process works. When you report an issue through 311Brampton, the issue is assigned a COBI (City of Brampton Incident) number. When you contact my office, we use this number to follow-up on your behalf.

Collaboration for a Cleaner, Greener Brampton

As your local Councillor, I enjoy walkabouts with residents like Suzie. These walkabouts give my team and I the opportunity to work directly with community members who are passionate about improving our neighbourhoods.

During the walkabout with Suzie, we discussed how we could further improve the area. We worked on an action plan for the Orangeville Railway greenspace that includes the Imagine Your Impact Campaign and our ongoing Parks Beautification efforts. Our walkabout continued to other problematic properties with excessive garbage. I was able to immediately reach out to the property owner and they confirmed a full clean-up would be scheduled for the following week.

Suzie shares her experience:

“I have lived in downtown Brampton for decades, and like my neighbours, I love our community. We all have a role to play in keeping our neighbourhood clean, which is why it’s a pleasure to work with Councillor Santos and her team. When I bring forward an issue to Service Brampton, like the litter along the railway and properties in downtown, we always work together to find solutions.”
