New ‘no encampment zones’ will speed up removal of at-risk shelters in Mississauga and Brampton

Peel Region and its municipalities, including Brampton and Mississauga, have launched joint encampment policies that designate ‘no-encampment zones’ for quicker removal of potentially unsafe tent sites. The policy framework, approved June 26, prioritizes public health and safety while aiming for a compassionate, coordinated response among cities, police, and outreach partners. Brampton has dedicated an internal Encampment Response Team to carry out these protocols—coordinating among enforcement, parks, policing, and social services. Councillor Santos underscores the importance of balancing compassion with safety, and calls for ongoing provincial and federal support to sustainably address encampment and housing challenges.
