City of Brampton approves motion to protect Stellantis Brampton Assembly Plant lands for automotive manufacturing

Today, Brampton City Council unanimously approved new planning protections for the Stellantis Brampton Assembly Plant, reinforcing the City’s commitment to safeguarding automotive manufacturing and protecting high-value jobs in the community. Through this decision, the City will take steps within its authority to amend the Official Plan, Zoning By-law and other relevant policies to explicitly designate the lands at 2000 Williams Parkway for automotive assembly and related automotive manufacturing uses.

“Brampton’s workers are the heartbeat of our economy, and we stand in total solidarity with Unifor to protect the thousands of families who rely on these high-quality jobs. When I met with the members last week, their message was clear: if you are going to sell in Canada, you must build in Canada. By protecting this land exclusively for automotive use, we are being bold in defending our local workforce and securing Brampton’s manufacturing future.”

— Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor, Wards 1 & 5; Vice-Chair, Economic Development, City of Brampton

The motion, brought forward by Mayor Patrick Brown and seconded by all of the Council unanimously, signals the City’s strong commitment to preserving automotive manufacturing. The decision reinforces support for an industry that has shaped Brampton’s economic and community identity for generations, amid ongoing pressures affecting the North American auto sector—including U.S. trade actions and tariffs that continue to disrupt production, investment, and employment across the industry.

The Stellantis Brampton Assembly Plant has long played a vital role in the local and national economy. Automotive assembly facilities are among the most sought-after investments in the world, recognized as major job creators attracting supplier networks, research and development investment and skilled workforce opportunities, while generating significant economic benefits for communities.

Council’s action reflects growing concerns about the stability of Canada’s automotive sector, which supports approximately 125,000 direct jobs and hundreds of thousands of indirect jobs nationwide. Today’s unanimous decision helps prevent the deterioration of a strategic manufacturing site while positioning surrounding employment lands for long-term economic success and investment readiness.
